Demineralization: Spring Cleaning For Your Hair

demineralization

Spring is the season of renewal, and most people don’t realize that their hair carries a literal weight of winter “dust”—
mineral buildup from hard water, chlorine from tap water, and heavy product usage.

What is hiding in your water?

We’ve all had that moment of, “Why isn’t my shampoo working the same anymore?” or “Why does this deep conditioner not feel like it’s doing anything?”

The simple answer is that your products cannot work correctly because there is mineral buildup on your hair. A mixture of calcium, magnesium, and copper that is found in our water will build up over time on your hair and weigh your hair down. Calcium and magnesium create a “scaly” film, while copper creates green tints and extreme dryness. If your hair feels like straw no matter how much conditioner you use, you likely have mineral buildup. It’s not just “dry hair”, it’s blocked hair.

What is a demineralizing treatment?

At M.J. Capelli, we offer two different demineralizing treatments.

Our tried-and-true demineralization treatment is our Malibu Makeover. The first part of the treatment is a crystal gel solution that uses Vitamin C to draw out hard water minerals, remove medication buildup, and targets hair discoloration from mineral buildup. Following up the hair’s treatment under the dryer, a deep conditioning treatment is applied to sink deep into the hair shaft and hydrate the hair from the inside out. ($53+)

Our up-and-coming, quick demineralization treatment is the ColorWow Dream Filter. This treatment is different in the way it is applied to dry hair, left for a few minutes and is then washed out, leaving your hair brighter, shinier, and silkier. This treatment is perfect to do right before highlights and color as well! The best part about this treatment is that you can take home ColorWow Dream Filter and use it at home every 9 shampoos or if you’re a swimmer, every 3 shampoos. ($19+)

Both are great options, ask your stylist which one would be best for you!

How does demineralizing work?

We asked Master Stylist Sherri Jones:

“Our hair is comprised with as few as 9 layers of cuticle (for fine hair) and on up to 25 layers for those that have thick-coarse hair strands. In our area we have both hard water and chlorine added to our water. Our hair has a positive charge where minerals have a negative charge. When water is added to our hair, our cuticle opens up and the minerals will attach to the under side of that cuticle. This happens especially to hair with longer lengths.Minerals in this area adds discoloration to your hair color as well.

Demineralizers use heat to help open up more cuticle layers and the demineralizing product has a more positive charge. The minerals are more attracted to that and is shampooed and rinsed down the sink. Just like limescale forms in layers on your sink faucets, minerals and chlorine does that as well. When your hair has been treated with a demineralization product, your hair has more volume, is lighter in color, less gold or green cast is left on the hair, softer and will have incredible shine”  – Sherri, 33rd
